In order to ensure the continuous and effective work of GPF, the vehicle's control unit (ECU) will control its regeneration. When the particulate matter inside the GPF accumulates to a certain extent, it will cause the back pressure of the exhaust system to rise. At this time, under certain conditions, for example, when the vehicle is driving at high speed, the exhaust temperature exceeds 700℃ and the oxygen concentration is greater than 0.5%, or the exhaust gas temperature is increased by the ignition angle through ECU control, and then the dilute air combustion ratio (excess oxygen) will be chemically exothermated. The reaction converts the combustion of particulate matter into carbon dioxide emissions, thus restoring the filtration and breathability of GPF.

At present, the filter materials of GPF mainly include coderine, SiC (silicon carbide), AT (aluminum titanate), alloy, etc. Among them, cordyrite is widely studied and used because of its low cost, low thermal expansion coefficient, high temperature resistance and high mechanical strength.
